Reporter Quarterly is a poetry and photography zine following the life of Hattie Hayes, documented in a photo journalistic style. Given the nature of this project’s inherent crossing of personal boundaries and intimacy, it is critical that both the process of capture as well as the ethical rules that informed them be made as transparent as possible from the beginning. With that in mind we will strictly adhere to the following rules:
-
Hattie will invite the photographer Jake to events in her life throughout the year to be documented candidly. These may include, but are not limited to:
-
Public events (theatre, comedy, music shows; poetry readings; Good Work sessions)
-
Parties/receptions
-
Meals, errands, and administrative tasks, inside or outside the home; “slice of life” events
-
Outings with friends/family
-
In-home events (writing workshops, day-job work, online conferences)
-
-
Jake and Hattie will not interact during the shoots in order to create an intentional subject/artist separation.
-
Hattie will not acknowledge Jake’s presence unless either party deems it necessary.
-
In social settings, Hattie will inform anyone accompanying her (friends, family, colleagues) of the ongoing photography project, its goals and constraints. All guests present at time will be assumed to have given consent to be photographed.
-
While the consent is implied, it must be made clear that consent can be revoked at any time for any reason. If a guest revokes consent, Hattie will immediately establish contact with Jake in order to verbally revoke consent and cease photography. In the event of consent being revoked, Hattie and Jake will both confirm with the guest if the existing photos are available for use, or need to be deleted.
-
Guests will also be asked to not acknowledge the presence of Jake unless informed otherwise.
-
Hattie’s partner Myles provides his consent to be photographed alongside Hattie during events inside and outside the home. In the event that Myles wishes to revoke consent for participation in a particular photographic event, he can/will contact Jake or allow Hattie to contact him on his behalf.
-
Jake may also self-select out of scenarios/environments where he feels uncomfortable or unable to complete a planned shoot (ex: Hattie is sick and Jake wants to avoid germs; Hattie is at an event where Jake feels overstimulated or encounters technical challenges). If Jake feels the need to end a planned shoot early, he will communicate this with Hattie via text at his convenience.
-
Nothing will be staged outside of the Cover Photos. All scenarios, lights, angles, etc will only occur organically.
-
Cover photos will be composed by Hattie and Jake in a studio setting. While the bulk of photos for Reporter Quarterly will be created on a digital camera, Hattie and Jake will explore options for using a film camera in the studio to create cover images.
-
The look of the image will not be altered or corrected after shooting. The look will be baked in based on camera settings.
-
Hattie and Jake will work together to develop a post-production “treatment” for photos to create a film grade appearance that is consistent across photos. They may choose to adjust this post-production treatment in accordance with themes or motifs contained in the four issues of Reporter Quarterly.
-
Hattie will compose poems during the year, and will upload them to a shared file in the Reporter Quarterly folder. Jake has Hattie’s permission to read these poems at his leisure.
